Cyberthreats don't take a day off — and neither should your protection. When your Trend Micro subscription expires, real-time scanning, web threat blocking, and ransomware protection all stop working, leaving your devices exposed to exactly the kind of attacks Trend Micro is designed to catch. The good news is that renewing is quick, and you have two clear paths to choose from: let the system handle it automatically with auto-renewal, or buy and activate a new code yourself whenever you're ready. This guide walks you through both options so you can stay protected without any gaps.

<Note>
  Trend Micro typically sends email reminders to the address on your TrendLife account **30 days, 14 days, and 3 days before your subscription expires**. Keep an eye on those messages — they'll include a direct link to your renewal options. If you're not receiving them, check your spam folder and make sure your account email address is current.

## Why Timely Renewal Matters

A lapsed subscription isn't just an inconvenience — it's a real security risk. Here's what stops working the moment your subscription expires:

* **Real-time malware and virus scanning** — Files you open, download, or receive are no longer scanned automatically
* **Web threat protection** — Malicious websites and phishing pages are no longer blocked in your browser
* **Ransomware protection** — The folder shield that prevents unauthorized apps from encrypting your files is deactivated
* **Automatic definition updates** — Trend Micro can't receive the latest threat intelligence to identify new malware strains

The longer your protection lapses, the wider the window for something to slip through. Renewing before expiry ensures continuous, uninterrupted coverage with no gap.

## Choose Your Renewal Method

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Auto-Renewal (Recommended)">
    Auto-renewal is the simplest way to stay protected — Trend Micro charges your saved payment method a few days before your subscription expires, and your protection continues seamlessly without any action from you.

    ### Confirm Auto-Renewal Is Enabled

    <Steps>
      <Step title="Sign in to your TrendLife account">
        Go to [account.trendlife.com](https://account.trendlife.com) and log in with your email and password.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Navigate to My Subscriptions">
        From the left-hand menu, click **My Subscriptions**. You'll see a list of all active licenses.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Check the auto-renewal toggle">
        Find the subscription you want to confirm. Look for the **Auto-Renewal** toggle next to it. If it shows **On**, you're all set — Trend Micro will renew it automatically.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Turn it on if it's off">
        If the toggle is set to **Off**, click it to enable auto-renewal. You'll be asked to confirm your payment method. Verify that your saved card is current and click **Confirm**.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Verify your billing details">
        While you're here, navigate to **Billing & Payments** and confirm your credit or debit card isn't expired. A failed payment at renewal time will result in a lapsed subscription even with auto-renewal enabled.
      </Step>
    </Steps>

    <Tip>
      If you want to change the plan (for example, increase the number of protected devices) when you renew, turn off auto-renewal and use the manual renewal path instead — that gives you the flexibility to choose a different tier.
    </Tip>

    ### What Happens at Auto-Renewal

    * Trend Micro charges your saved payment method 1–3 days before expiry
    * Your subscription expiry date is extended by the same term (1 year in most cases)
    * You receive an email confirmation with your renewal receipt
    * No reinstallation or code entry is required — the extension happens in the background

    <Note>
      Auto-renewal charges appear on your statement as **Trend Micro** or **TM Software**. You'll always receive a receipt email before and after the charge is processed.
    </Note>

  <Tab title="Manual Renewal">
    If you prefer to control exactly when and where you renew — or if you want to shop around for a deal — you can manually purchase a new activation code and apply it to your account.

    ### Purchase a New Code

    You can buy a renewal code from:

    * **[trendmicro.com](https://www.trendmicro.com)** — The official store often has promotional pricing, especially around subscription expiry time
    * **Major retailers** — Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Costco frequently stock Trend Micro subscription cards (physical or digital)
    * **Your TrendLife account** — Under **My Subscriptions**, click **Renew Now** next to your expiring plan to go directly to the checkout

    ### Activate Your New Code

    <Steps>
      <Step title="Locate your new activation code">
        If you bought online, check your confirmation email. If you bought a retail card, find the code on the card inside the packaging.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Sign in to your TrendLife account">
        Go to [account.trendlife.com](https://account.trendlife.com) and sign in.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Go to Activate a Code">
        You have two options here. The quickest is to visit the official activation portal at [trendmicro.com/activate](https://www.trendmicro.com/activate) directly in your browser. Alternatively, sign in to [account.trendlife.com](https://account.trendlife.com) and look for the **Activate Code** or **Redeem a Code** option on the dashboard or the **My Subscriptions** page.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Enter your activation code">
        Type or paste your 20-digit code exactly as it appears, then click **Activate**. The system will validate the code and apply the renewal to your existing subscription.
      </Step>

      <Step title="Confirm the new expiry date">
        After activation, return to **My Subscriptions** and confirm that your expiry date has been extended. Your protection is now continuous.
      </Step>
    </Steps>

    <Warning>
      If you're renewing manually, make sure to turn off auto-renewal **before** your subscription expires to avoid being charged twice — once for the manual renewal code you already bought, and once by the auto-renewal system.
    </Warning>

## What Happens If Your Subscription Lapses

If your subscription expires before you renew, your Trend Micro software will:

1. Display an **expired subscription** warning on the dashboard
2. **Disable real-time protection** — manual scans may still run, but active threat blocking stops
3. Prompt you to renew each time you open the application

You can still renew after expiry — simply follow the manual renewal steps above, or turn auto-renewal back on and purchase a new term. Your settings, scan history, and protected folders configuration are preserved and will reactivate as soon as a valid subscription is applied.

<Note>
  If your subscription has been lapsed for more than 30 days, Trend Micro recommends running a full system scan immediately after renewing to check for any threats that may have gotten through during the unprotected window.

## Frequently Asked Questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Will I lose my settings if I renew?">
    No. Renewing your subscription — whether through auto-renewal or a manual code — does not reset or change any of your configurations. Your scheduled scans, protected folder settings, exclusion lists, parental controls, and any other preferences remain exactly as you left them. Renewal only extends the expiry date of your license.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I switch plans when renewing?">
    Yes, but the process differs depending on your renewal method. If you're using **auto-renewal**, it will renew you on the same plan you currently have. To switch to a different plan (for example, from a 1-device to a 5-device license, or from Antivirus to Maximum Security), turn off auto-renewal before your subscription expires, then purchase a new code for the plan you want and activate it manually through your TrendLife account. The new plan's features and device allowance will take effect immediately upon activation.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="My renewal code isn't working — what should I do?">
    If you enter a renewal code and receive an error, try the following:

    * **Check for typos** — The letters `O` (oh) and `0` (zero), or `l` (lowercase L) and `1` (one), are commonly confused. Re-examine each character.
    * **Confirm the code applies to your region** — Some codes are region-specific. A code purchased in one country may not activate in another.
    * **Verify the code hasn't already been used** — If you bought from a reseller or third-party marketplace, the code may have been previously redeemed. Always buy from authorized retailers.
    * **Check for whitespace** — If you're pasting the code, make sure no extra spaces were added at the beginning or end of the field.

    If the problem persists, contact **Trend Micro Support** via live chat at [account.trendlife.com](https://account.trendlife.com) and have your purchase receipt ready. They can validate your purchase and manually apply the renewal to your account.
